The Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission is facing a very unique problem, the state run organization is becoming too successful. The commission, which aims to reduce litter around the state, has been seeing such a strong reduction in litter that their cleanup crews are often bored.
The commission holds two major cleanup periods, spring and fall, each year with events going on around the state where volunteers cleanup. This year the commission was able to completely cleanup the state in one weekend, something that previously would take several months.
“Our volunteers had nothing to do, they really are just too good at their job” says the Keep Arkansas Beautiful volunteer services coordinator. “We ended up going and setting some trash out after the third weekend of nothing to do. We even offered to go pick up after Riverfest and the volunteers had it done in a couple of hours.”
The commission is looking into ways to further engage volunteers in order to stay relevant. One of the popular ideas is cleaning up Mississippi instead “Those guys have a ton of trash, that place is a mess. Cleaning up Mississippi should keep us busy for a while,” the Keep Arkansas Beautiful director tells us.
The commission plans to conduct their first cleanup November 10-13th in Oxford, MS following the Ole Miss football team’s loss.
