Authorities Search for Culprits Who Painted Fayetteville’s Dickson Street Green

On Monday drivers and business owners on Fayetteville’s Dickson Street discovered the thoroughfare had been painted green overnight.

“It appears to be some kind of St. Patrick’s Day prank,” said Fayetteville Police Detective Scott Wynne.

The paint wasn’t completely dry when Monday morning rush hour traffic began, leaving motorists with green paint on their tires.  A pair of shoes and three different right shoes was found stuck in the paint at the intersection Dickson and West, near the Walton Arts Center.

Police are questioning members at University of Arkansas fraternities, particularly those on Arkansas Boulevard, which is around the corner from Dickson Street.  Green footprints were left on the sidewalk on the east side of the street, which is the location of several fraternity houses.

Employees of Mickey Finn’s, an Irish-theme bar on Dickson Street, have also been questioned.  “We don’t have any evidence linking anyone from that bar to the incident,” said Wynne.  “But it seemed like a good place to start.  It was kind of hard to look at all that green beer after being around so much green paint on the street.  The paint fumes are pretty overwhelming.”

The paint covered crosswalks and lines separating traffic lanes, causing additional concern about public safety.

“We’ve been calling around to find an industrial paint remover but haven’t been able to find one that can do it before Thursday,” reported Donna Blythe of the Fayetteville Street Department.  “It might be easier and cheaper to just leave it and paint new crosswalks over the green.  Personally, I think red would be nice.  It would be like Christmas all year.”

“It’s a wild night to begin with,” said University of Arkansas student Kyle Bassett.  “Not that anybody paid much attention to the crosswalks on St. Patrick’s Day anyway.”
