Fayetteville Bids to Host 2024 Winter Olympics

FAYETTEVILLE – Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan today announced the creation of a committee to formally bid to host the 2024 Winter Olympic games in Northwest Arkansas.

“Winter never seems to end in Fayetteville,” Jordan said.  “With all the snow and ice we receive, it occurred to me that we could take better advantage of it.”

The announcement was greeted warmly by the International Olympic Committee.

“We have seen the weather data,” said IOC Chairman Thomas Bach of Germany. “Fayetteville certainly qualifies to host a winter Olympics.”

Preliminary plans call for the construction of a ski jump inside Razorback Stadium and several slalom courses on the slopes of Mount Sequoyah. An ice channel would be carved down Dickson Street for the bobsled, luge and skeleton competitions. Ice skating and hockey would be held on a frozen Lake Fayetteville. The curling competition would be held in Bud Walton Arena.
