The International Food Society at their annual conference in New York has named Hot Dog Mike’s food cart 2012’s Sexiest Mobile Food Vehicle. This marks the first time the award, coveted among street vendors, has been presented to a hot dog cart.
“There is just something about that cart. Maybe it is the always shiny chrome, maybe it is the stickers that feel like tattoos on a perfect body, or maybe it is the bright colored umbrella that gives a bit of fun to an otherwise suave cart,” says award chairman Richard Hitachi. “Whatever it is, I like it. I never get tired of looking at that cart.”
Michael Juiliano who started the cart almost 2 years ago in Little Rock was shocked and honored to receive the award. “Honestly it is a humbling experience. You pour so much of your time into making the cart look as good as possible. Then someone comes along and recognizes your work. It is a dog slinger’s dream really.”
Last year’s winner, Los Angeles based Komodo Truck, was also struck by Hot Dog Mike’s cart’s stunning looks. “Everything about it makes you want to sink your teeth into that cart’s dogs,” says Komodo Chef Erwin Tjahyadi. “This is the type of cart that all the other food trucks wanted to ask out to the prom.”
As a part of the award a replica of Hot Dog Mike’s cart will be added to the Mobile Food Hall of Fame. The Little Rock Downtown partnership and the City of Little Rock will host a parade in the cart’s honor later this fall in downtown Little Rock. After which a portion of 4th street will be renamed Hot Dog Avenue. The city says details of this event and future street section are forthcoming.
