Movies in the Park to Host Mystery Science Theater Contest

In addition to releasing their 2013 schedule, Movies in the Park announced today that they will hold their inaugural Mystery Science Theater Contest. The contest is expected to bring some of central Arkansas’ best movie commentators.

Movies in the Park began in 2007 and has taken place each year at the Riverfest amphitheater. The movies are typically a mix of old classics, cult favorites, and new movies. The size of the event has grown each year, topping several thousand for popular movies. The event is free for all ages, and occasionally vendors setup for concession.

The Mystery Science Theater contest is set up to add an extra level of fun to the event. “Having a public, outdoor, event has always brought people who like to comment as the movie is going” Movies in the Park spokesperson Blake Rutherford tells us. “This year we wanted to formalize the popular banter that always takes place. We really think people will have fun with this.”

Individuals looking to enter the competition are encouraged to sit in the front row of the amphitheater. Costumes and group entries are allowed. Contest entrees are first come, first serve. Participants are encouraged to vocalize loudly, as volunteer judges are sitting in various locations in the next 4 rows.

The top 20 participants from the season will be invited back for the finals on August 7th for the screening of The Avengers. The winner of the contest will be invited to pick 4 films for the 2014 lineup.
